I am wondering what people think is the best survival knife.(the one you have on you der! Lol). My thoughts are as follows. In a survival situation you may simply be lost. But the chances of waking up in the tropics lost on a beach are slim. So the "best" survival knife will/could be different by region. In reality the survival/bushcraft/camping knife is going to have a LOT of crossover. The difference being with a survival knife i think the expectation is that it may very well be the ONLY tool you have. My "expected" survival activities would happen in the north east usa. Skinning and processing small game.(squirrel and bird) Carving tools and traps.(think try stick). Cutting ropes and straps and various things found. Processing wood for fire. Making wedges and shelter. And so on. In a survival situation the possibilities are endless of what you could have to do. So a "good" survival knife must be a compromise. Able to do anything. Probably great at nothing. I would eliminate any blade with a coating. If it needs to be coated, coatings wear off.... I would eliminate anything with removable handles. I would eliminate anything that isnt rust resistant. Sorry 10xx. The sheath it comes in must be taken into consideration. It must be able to stand up to weather. Funny blade shapes and multiple angles are out. You must be able to sharpen and strop on whatever. No rubbery handles that fall apart. Full tang. What do you think makes the grade as a "great" survival knife? And if one does not exist for you then what metal? What bladeshape.what handle materials. What sheath? What thickness? http://ift.tt/2fs1gs3
