Improved shorter-term hardtack?

So I have a month-long hiking trip coming up and as part of my food-stuffs I wanted to make hardtack. My understanding is that it's cheap, lasts forever and has a decent calorie count. Now, I'm willing to reduce the shelf-life from decades to a few months for the sake of flavor and nutrition. I figure it might be useful for my trip, as well as emergency winter car rations and other similar applications. Some things I was considering adding were: ground up (nearly powdered) jerky, multi-vitamins, chocolate protein powder, honey, dried herbs or spices or maybe ground nuts or dried fruits. Not all of these in one recipe, but combinations.Does anyone have experience or suggestions for something like this? I'm not sure what will last or work. It still needs to hold together and be shelf-stable at room temp. Any advice or suggestions would be welcome. http://ift.tt/2fQl1Nr
