Best Bushcraft/backpacking knife under $75? Some light and can cut wood.

I've been looking at the SOG Seal Pup, but I'm still on the fence about it. I carried one in Iraq and really liked or before it was stolen.Now I'm looking for a knife for backpacking where miles count. Something that I won't mind carrying, but good enough for defense and for chopping up wood at the end of the day with the hel p of a rock.If a knife is a knife, and it can do all the knifey things. I'd say defense from large animals is my biggest concern. Packs of dogs, black bear, raccoon.
